Stewart Fieldhouse
Stewart Fieldhouse, constructed in 1924, stands as one of the most historic athletic facilities in the region and is recognized as the oldest building west of the Mississippi River still in use for its original purpose. For more than a century, it has served as the home of Southwestern College’s Moundbuilder basketball and volleyball programs while evolving to meet the needs of modern athletics.
The facility houses a wide range of athletic operations, including administrative offices, sports information offices, athletic training facilities, football offices, and locker rooms for football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and men’s and women’s soccer. Over its 102-year history, Stewart Fieldhouse has undergone numerous renovations, blending its rich tradition with updated functionality. Notable changes include the removal of a former second-level seating area that once wrapped around the gym and the renovation of the original stage space into offices for the men’s and women’s basketball programs.
A centerpiece of the facility is the James Farney American Flag, unveiled in honor of the late James Farney, a 1954 Southwestern College graduate. Farney was an All-American tennis player and a four-year basketball letterman who remained a devoted supporter of Builder athletics throughout his life. His legacy is also reflected in the James Farney Men’s Basketball Locker Room and Farney Plaza, located just outside the south side of Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
Stewart Fieldhouse continues to be a cornerstone of Southwestern athletics, connecting generations of student-athletes through its deep history and ongoing role in the college’s athletic success.
