Texas Trip Ends in Defeat for SC Women's Soccer, Fall to East Texas Baptist 3-0

Box Score

MARSHALL, Texas – On Labor Day, the Southwestern College women's soccer team traveled to Marshall, Texas, where they would play their second match in the State of Texas in three days. After earning a victory against SAGU in Waxahachie on Saturday, fortune was no longer in the Builders' favor against the NCAA Division III Tigers of East Texas Baptist University. The battle ended in a 3-0 loss for Southwestern, ending their winning streak at two matches.

In the opening half of play, things were rather even up until the 40th minute, when the Tigers put their first tally on the board to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Southwestern had multiple good chances on net in the first, but could not break through, as Julian Cowley and Taylor Holcombe had shots on net, as well as Lillian Grisso with two.

The second half would not get any easier for the Builders, as the Tigers scored their second goal in the 59th minute, as well as their third tally in the 65th minute of play. But again, SC had multiple attempts on goal that were sent away by the ETBU keeper. It just was simply not in the cards for the Builders to earn the victory on this day.

The Moundbuilders actually had more shots on goal than ETBU in the bout, though the Tigers took a total of 18 shots, while SC only attempted 10 in comparison. Seven of the 10 Builder tries were on target, while only four shots were on net for the home squad. The catch was that three of four shots from ETBU ended up in the net.

Grisso and Holcombe led the way for Southwestern in the shots on goal department, as they each recorded two. Keiana Jones and Ana Llanos tried two shots apiece, with one being on goal for each of them. Cowley had a single shot in the match, which was the first shot on goal of the match for SC, while Daniela Barrantes was credited with a shot off target in the tilt.

Mallorie Lund had a difficult day in net, as the Tigers' attackers were on point with the shots that they were able to put on frame. None of the four shots on net by ETBU were easy saves by any stretch, and three of the four attempts found their way into the net.

The Builders (2-2-1, 0-0 KCAC) will face off with the Oklahoma City University Stars on Saturday, September 10 at 5 p.m. on the road in OKC. That will be their final tune up before the start of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) slate on the following Saturday at home against the University of Saint Mary.
