Builder Tennis Teams Take Care of Business Against KWU at T.H. Vaughan

4/8/2023 7:50:00 PM

WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College men's and women's tennis squads faced off with the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan University at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Complex in Winfield on Saturday morning. The battles each went the way of the Moundbuilders, as the men edged the Coyotes by a 5-2 score and the women earned their second 7-0 sweep of the campaign.

In the women's doubles' competition, Catherine Coe and Mariana Ochoa bested the number one pair of the Coyotes by a final of 7-5. Jasmin Hauska and Grace Roberts defeated their opponents by a much more comfortable margin, as they did not lose a set. The KWU women did not have a third doubles pairing, so the Moundbuilders earned the win in the bout, as well, even though they had already won the doubles point.

The men's bout began much differently, as Ryan Kitchin and Pablo Rodriguez fell by a final tally of 7-5 to begin the slate. Then, Logan Engel and Benjamin Erdmann dropped their doubles' matchup by a final tally of 6-1. Lastly, Albert Modol and Federico Poi dropped the remaining doubles' bout by a score of 7-6 (6), as the Moundbuilders dropped the doubles point.

On the women's side of singles, Southwestern managed a sweep, as Coe conjured up a 7-5, 7-6 (5) triumph as the No. 1 battle winner. Hauska won by a score of 6-0, 6-1 in her battle, as both Mariana Ochoa and Grace Roberts managed to win every set of their matchups, winning 6-0, 6-0. Emily Feihle did not have an opponent from Kansas Wesleyan, so the final point went to the Moundbuilders by default.

Besides their top singles match, Southwestern won the remaining five singles tilts, securing them an overall victory. Poi fell 6-2, 6-2 in the top bout, but Kitchin (6-4, 3-6, 6-3), Rodriguez (7-5, 6-2), Modol (6-2, 6-2), Erdmann (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) and Engela (6-2, 6-4) all reigned victorious over their Coyote counterparts.

The SC men will be continuing their slate in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) on Thursday, Apr. 13 at 4 p.m. in Winfield at T.H. Vaughan Tennis Complex. The women will have to wait until Saturday, Apr. 15 in McPherson, when both Builder squads will face off with two nationally recognized teams from McPherson College.
