WINFIELD, Kan. – Southwestern College continued its strong start to the season with a dominant doubleheader sweep over Mission (Mo.), securing a 7-3 win in Game 1 before taking Game 2 by a 7-1 margin at Broadway Sports.
Game 1: Southwestern 7, Mission 3
A fast start and steady pitching lifted the Moundbuilders (3-1) past Mission in the opener. Southwestern plated two runs in the first inning before breaking the game open with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from L. Hardman.
M. Shaw (2-0) was in command on the mound, tossing seven innings of two-hit ball while striking out three. He was lifted in the seventh after issuing two walks, allowing E. Willesden to close the game despite a late push from Mission.
T. Henry drove in two runs, while R. Wright went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Southwestern collected seven hits in the game, capitalizing on free passes and errors to build a comfortable lead.
Mission (0-10) struggled to generate offense, managing just four hits. The visitors scratched across three late runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.
Game 2: Southwestern 7, Mission 1
Southwestern completed the sweep with another solid performance in the second game, using a six-run fourth inning to put the contest out of reach.
R. Wright played a key role in the breakout frame, crushing a bases-clearing triple to extend the Moundbuilders' lead. L. Hardman and M. Reinert also delivered run-scoring hits, while E. Garza crossed the plate twice.
F. Campbell (2-0) earned the win with a complete-game effort, allowing just one unearned run on five hits while striking out two. The Moundbuilders' defense played a role, turning a pair of key double plays.
Mission took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an error but failed to build on the momentum, stranding nine runners on base.
With the sweep, Southwestern improves to 4-1 on the season and will look to continue its strong play as non-conference action continues next week.
