LAMONI, Iowa – Southwestern College secured its first conference win of the season with a 19-13 victory over Graceland University (3-1.2-1) on Saturday, March 8, 2025. The game, which took place at Huntsman Field, saw the Builders rally to overcome a 7-6 halftime deficit and hold off a late Graceland push.
The match began in a defensive struggle, with both teams failing to score in the opening quarter. Graceland broke the deadlock early in the second quarter when Shyla Barrios capped a 9-play, 49-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, giving the Yellowjackets a 7-0 lead.
Southwestern (1-2, 1-2) responded just minutes later, as Kennedi Hayes connected with Olivia Manfre on a 40-yard strike to set up a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mary Jones, cutting Graceland's lead to 7-6. The extra point attempt failed, leaving Graceland with a slim one-point advantage heading into halftime.
The turning point came early in the third quarter. After a Graceland turnover, Southwestern capitalized on a 28-yard drive, capped off by Hayes' second touchdown pass to Jones for 7 yards, taking a 12-7 lead. The Builders never looked back.
With a 12-7 lead entering the fourth quarter, Southwestern sealed the win with a final touchdown from Hayes to Jeanie Tuku, who caught a 4-yard pass to push the lead to 19-13. Graceland's final possession ended in a turnover on downs, securing the Builders' victory.
In the win, Hayes threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 58 yards on 14 carries. Jones and Manfre each had impressive receiving performances, with Jones catching two touchdown passes and Manfre contributing with a 40-yard reception.
Graceland's Barrios passed for 167 yards and a touchdown, but was unable to spark a second-half comeback, as the Yellowjackets were held scoreless in the third quarter and could only muster a single touchdown in the fourth.
The victory marks a critical win for Southwestern College as they look to build momentum in their conference schedule.
