Moundbuilders Drop Conference Doubleheader to Bethany

Winfield, Kan. — Southwestern College softball fell in both ends of a doubleheader against Bethany College on Friday, dropping the opener 6-2 and falling in the nightcap 14-1 at home in KCAC play.

In Game 1, Bethany plated all six of its runs in the first two innings, putting early pressure on the Moundbuilders. Southwestern responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as junior designated player Tiara Henry roped a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly from junior outfielder Lainey Hardman. Junior shortstop Taylor Mesna added a double and scored the other run for the Builders.

Faith Campbell started in the circle and settled in after the second inning, tossing five scoreless frames the rest of the way while striking out three and allowing just one walk.

Despite solid pitching, the Moundbuilders struggled to capitalize offensively, leaving multiple runners on base and tallying just six hits in the opener.

The nightcap saw Bethany's bats erupt early and often, scoring in four of five innings to complete the sweep. The Swedes racked up 16 hits, including a five-RBI performance from S. Gomez and a 4-for-4 outing from D. Espinosa.

Southwestern's lone run came in the third inning when freshman Mackenzie Reinert led off with a single and eventually came around to score on an RBI from Henry, who finished the day with three hits across both games.

Freshman pitcher Emma Willesden took the loss in Game 2, while Campbell again saw action in relief.

Southwestern (9-27, 1-19 KCAC) will look to bounce back in their next outing as they continue conference play at home
