SALINA, KS — Southwestern College softball dropped both conference doubleheader games against Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday falling 12-0 in the opener and 6-1 in the nightcap.
In Game 1, Kansas Wesleyan (16-18, 7-9) struck early with a five-run first inning highlighted by a leadoff home run from Haleigh Summers and a two-run single from Claire Mallet. The Coyotes added seven more runs over the next four innings while holding Southwestern (7-19, 1-14) scoreless.
Southwestern struggled at the plate, scattering just five hits without scoring a run. Jolie Boyd led the Moundbuilders with two hits, and Mackenzie Reinert added another, but the offense failed to produce with runners in scoring position. Pitchers Morgan Shaw and Emma Willesden combined for five innings, giving up 14 hits and 12 runs (11 earned).
In Game 2, the Moundbuilders showed signs of life but were again outmatched, falling 6-1. Kansas Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the first and never trailed. Southwestern plated its only run in the fourth inning when Taylor Mesna delivered an RBI single to bring home pinch runner Eva Navrat.
Reinert and Mesna both recorded hits, with Reagan Wright collecting two bunt singles. Willesden (1-7) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over four innings. Faith Campbell pitched the final three frames, yielding just one run while striking out one.
The Coyotes' Alyssa Mickelsen (5-5) went the distance in Game 2, striking out seven and allowing six hits without walking a batter.
Southwestern returns to action next week in search of its second conference win as the regular season winds down.
