WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College fell 2-1 to Southwestern Christian University at Richard L. Jantz Stadium, as a rain delay of more than an hour pushed kickoff from 5 p.m. to 6:30.
Southwestern Christian (1-0-1) grabbed an early lead in the ninth minute on a goal by Sofia Ovando, then doubled the advantage midway through the second half when Shosona Graham scored in the 64th.
Southwestern (0-2) pulled one back in the 77th minute when center back Natalie Belanger scored her first goal of the season, pushing forward on a set piece to finish inside the box.
Goalkeeper Hayden Clark made seven saves to keep the Moundbuilders in the contest, including four in the opening half. Southwestern managed six shots — three on target — and pressed late with looks from Jamie Lawrence and Hanna Culp, but could not find the equalizer.
The Moundbuilders will look to regroup when they host the University of Science and Arts (Okla.) on Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. at Jantz Stadium.
