Southwestern Shuts Out Cottey 19-0 at Jantz Stadium

WINFIELD, Kan. — Kennedi Hayes threw three touchdown passes as Southwestern improved to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play with a 19-0 victory over Cottey College, which fell to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in conference, on Monday night at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.

The Builders scored twice in the opening quarter and added another touchdown in the second to build a 19-point halftime lead that held the rest of the way.

Southwestern struck early after a defensive takeaway on Cottey's opening possession. Devina Lytle intercepted a pass at the Comets' 17-yard line to give the Builders strong field position. Hayes capitalized moments later, connecting with Aiyanna Sims for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 10:26 remaining in the first quarter.

The Builders extended the lead late in the first quarter when Hayes found Vivianna Solis for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 1:33 remaining, giving Southwestern a 12-0 advantage.

Southwestern added its final score midway through the second quarter. Hayes led a four-play, 38-yard drive that ended with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Brooke Reed. Mary Jones added the extra point to push the lead to 19-0 with 7:50 left before halftime.

Hayes finished 21 of 36 passing for 188 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Builders offensively. Solis paced the receiving corps with eight catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, while Sims and Reed each added scoring receptions.

Southwestern's defense controlled the game throughout, holding Cottey to just two first downs and negative total yardage. The Builders recorded nine tackles for loss and forced multiple turnovers while limiting the Comets to 36 offensive plays.

Kennedy Wesley led the defensive effort with nine tackles and four tackles for loss, while Andrea Moon added six tackles and a sack.

Southwestern finished with 223 total yards of offense and held the ball for more than 20 minutes while Cottey managed -172 total yards in the contest.

Southwestern will return to action Monday against the Bethel College Threshers at Stewart Field House. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
