HESSTON, Kan. — The Southwestern College flag football team used a dominant defensive effort and a clutch overtime touchdown to defeat Hesston College 12-6 on Wednesday evening in a conference matchup. Kennedi Hayes threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Andrea Moon in overtime to secure the win for Southwestern to a 12-6 verus Hesston College.
The Builders improved to 2-0 on the season after Kennedi Hayes connected with Andrea Moon for the game-winning touchdown in overtime to seal the victory. The game was scoreless through the first half as both defenses controlled play. The scoring began in the third quarter as Southwestern struck first when Hayes found Lilibeth Rico for a touchdown pass, giving the Builders a 6-0 lead. Hesston (0-3) answered later in the quarter when Alexis Pabon connected with Lauren Payne on an 11-yard touchdown pass. The extra-point attempt failed, leaving the game tied at 6-6. Hesston.
Hesston got the ball first in overtime, but Southwestern's defense stuffed the Larks, with a sack from Moon. With little time left, Hayes then ended the game with the touchdown throw to Moon.
Hayes finished 19-of-33 passing for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Moon led the Builders with nine receptions for 86 yards and the game-winning touchdown while also recording four sacks and seven tackles on defense.
Mary Jones added four catches for 76 yards and recorded an interception, while Rico finished with four receptions, including a touchdown, and also returned an interception 20 yards.
Defensively, the Builders were dominant, recording four sacks and two interceptions while holding Hesston to just 125 total yards and -45 rushing yards.
Southwestern will look to remain unbeaten when the Builders hit the road to face Ottawa University on Saturday, March 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
