WINFIELD, Kan. — Kennedi Hayes threw three touchdown passes to Mary Jones, and Southwestern (Kan.) smothered Texas Wesleyan University 26-0 on Wednesday at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
The Builders improved to (6-3) (5-3), while Texas Wesleyan fell to (2-2) (0-0).
Southwestern seized control early and never let go. Hayes and Jones connected for an 80-yard touchdown with 10:20 left in the first quarter to open the scoring. After another quick Southwestern stop, Hayes found Jones again for a 29-yard score with 3:44 remaining in the opening quarter, pushing the lead to 12-0.
The Builders added another big blow in the second quarter after Lilibeth Rico intercepted a Texas Wesleyan pass at the Southwestern 38. Southwestern turned the takeaway into points when Hayes hit Jones for a 13-yard touchdown with 4:22 left before halftime. Vivianna Solis converted the extra point to make it 19-0.
Jones finished with five catches for 124 yards and three touchdowns, while Hayes completed 16 of 23 passes for 177 yards and three scores. Hayes also added 50 rushing yards on 13 carries as Southwestern outgained Texas Wesleyan 252-74.
Southwestern's defense was just as decisive. Andrea Moon had a dominant all-around game, recording nine tackles, five tackles for loss and four sacks, while also scoring on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap an 11:39 drive and extend the lead to 26-0. Moon added the extra point herself.
The Builders forced four interceptions and held Texas Wesleyan to five first downs and 0-for-9 on third down. Mary Jones added two interceptions on defense, while Rico also had a pick. Kennedy Wesley contributed six tackles and two pass breakups.
Texas Wesleyan (2-2) (0-0) was led by Mikaela Nunez, who had five catches for 39 yards and an interception, and Vaugh Aden, who posted 10 tackles. Ti'yanna Johnson added eight tackles for the Rams.
Southwestern (6-3) (5-3) will return to action Saturday against the Graceland Yellowjackets at Richard L. Jantz Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
