WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern dropped both ends of a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to Tabor on Saturday at home, falling 11-2 and 9-1, with both games ending after five innings.
In the opener, Southwestern recorded eight hits but was unable to keep pace with a high-powered Tabor offense that scored in four of five innings. The Bluejays broke the game open with a five-run third inning and added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth to secure the run-rule victory.
Taylor Mesna led the Moundbuilders at the plate, going 2-for-3, while Ellie Kucera added a 2-for-2 performance. Lainey Hardman also contributed with a hit and a run scored. Despite the offensive production, Southwestern was limited to two runs in the fifth inning.
In game two, Southwestern again tallied eight hits but struggled to convert opportunities into runs, scoring its lone run in the fifth inning. Tabor used a big fourth inning to take control before adding late insurance to complete the sweep.
Mesna continued her strong day at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 to lead Southwestern. Tiara Henry and Fayth Howard each added a hit, while Taya Gable drove in the team's only run. Southwestern was held scoreless through the first four innings before breaking through late.
Defensively, Southwestern played error-free softball across both contests, but Tabor combined for 20 runs on 26 hits in the doubleheader.
Southwestern will look to bounce back in its next conference matchup as the Moundbuilders aim to regroup heading into the final stretch of the season.
