Southwestern College has announced the hiring of Conner Cheney as the program’s new head flag football coach.

Cheney, a familiar name within the Moundbuilder football community, brings a strong combination of playing experience, coaching success, and institutional knowledge to the role. An Oklahoma City native, Cheney has spent the past six years at Southwestern.

Cheney earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accounting in 2023 and completed his Master of Arts in Sports Management in 2025. During his time as a student-athlete, he competed as an offensive lineman and tight end, contributing to two conference championship teams while also earning multiple KCAC All-Conference Student-Athlete honors in football and track and field.

He began his coaching career at Southwestern as a graduate assistant working with tight ends and recruited across Oklahoma and Missouri. The Builders posted an 11-2 record during that span, won a conference championship, and advanced to the second round of the NAIA playoffs while leading the nation in passing touchdowns.

Cheney was elevated to assistant coach for wide receivers in March 2025, where he also served as an admissions representative. The Builders continued their offensive dominance, finishing 8-3 while leading the nation in scoring offense (51.9 points per game), total offense (541.5 yards per game), passing touchdowns, and third-down conversion percentage. His position group produced four All-Conference selections and two All-Americans, while also contributing to a kickoff return unit that recorded five touchdowns.

Known for his versatility, Cheney has experience coaching multiple positions including offensive line, tight ends, and wide receivers. His approach emphasizes player development, accountability, and continuous improvement.

"Conner has demonstrated a strong work ethic throughout his time at Southwestern," said Athletic Director, Matt O'Brien. "He understands our culture and values, and we're confident he will build a competitive and successful flag football program."

Cheney will immediately begin preparations for the upcoming season focusing on recruiting to establish a strong foundation for Southwestern's flag football future.
