The 2022-2023 season will mark the start of Avery Sims’ collegiate coaching career at Southwestern. Avery grew up in Houston, TX competing in athletics for St. Pius X High School before going on to be a dual sport athlete in college, gaining playing experience at the JUCO, Division 2, and NAIA levels. Sims began his coaching career after graduating with his Bachelor of Arts in Business in 2019 by accepting an Athletic Administration Graduate Assistant position at Southwestern College. While earning his Masters of Business Administration (2021) he served as a long-term sub and Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach at Central Burden High School.

Avery quickly noticed the need to develop youth basketball in South Central Kansas and made it his personal mission to play his part in growing the game by starting Primetime Express Travel Basketball Organization. As the Team Owner and Head Coach of Primetime Express Basketball Organization, Avery has built a reputation for running an effective athletic program, which has built the program to be recognized as a top 50 team in the state of Kansas for the last two years.

Avery’s involvement with youth in our area ultimately led to him accepting a teaching position at Winfield Middle School - USD 465 teaching their JAG-K program. Coach Sims’ leadership is evident, not only on the sidelines, but also in the classroom as he has grown the middle school JAG program from 28 students to 45 in just two years while having multiple students place 1st in state-wide scholastic competitions.

While growing his travel basketball program and teaching at the middle school, Avery Sims has manned the sideline for the Winfield Vikings High School Basketball Program as their Head JV Coach. Sims was able to quickly leave his imprint on the program, leading their Junior Varsity team to their first winning season in over five years. In addition to Avery’s above accomplishments, he has been a pillar in his community by volunteering, attending Central Baptist Church, cultivating mutually beneficial sponsorships, and mentoring the young men and women both on and off the court.
