Box Score HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Southwestern College men's soccer team entered Saturday night's tilt with the Tabor College Bluejays with nothing but their pride to play for, and that is exactly what they did. They rode a victory over Tabor to their second Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) triumph of 2022, getting outstanding efforts from several of the typical main contributors. Mamadou Diarra's 83rd minute tally vaulted SC to a 3-2 win over the hosts.
The game started in favor of the Builders. In the 10th minute of play, Hector Hernandez scored the first goal for Southwestern via an assist by Wilber Landaverde. Landaverde was able to intercept the ball, run through the defense and pass the ball to Hernandez who drove the ball into the bottom left corner of the frame.
The Builders kept pushing and showed offensive strength with multiple shots taken by Mamadou Diarra. In the 16th minute of play, Jack Etheridge scored the second goal of the game to improve the SC lead to 2-0. Malvin Mupondi crossed the ball into the box from the right side, where Etheridge jumped, and headed the ball over Tabor's goalkeeper into the net.
The Bluejays did not give up and started a comeback in the 23rd minute when Christoph Seeger scored after an assist by Devin Read to change the score to 2-1. The game went on, and it was Tabor again who was able to score to tie the game. In the 34th minute, James Trevis scored the equalizing goal on an assist by Ander Bengoetxea. The tally made it 2-2 at the break.
Coming off of halftime, the Builders were ready to fight. Both teams had their chances throughout, but it was the Builders who were able to score their third and final goal of the game to earn the win. In the 84th minute of the game, Mamadou Diarra scored with a beautiful strike to win the game for the Builders.
Diarra was responsible for taking half of the team's 12 shots, as the team also had only four shots on goal. Three of those four tickled the twine, as the Tabor netminder could only keep one shot from reaching the back of the net.
The win over Tabor completes the season of the Southwestern College men's soccer team with a record of 5-7-5, 2-5-5 KCAC. Though the season was a difficult one, winning the final match of the year against a solid Tabor team was a good way to finish. We will look forward to seeing the squad back at it in the 2023 campaign.
