Box Score WINFIELD, Kan. – On Wednesday evening, the Southwestern College men's soccer squad played host to the Bethel College Threshers, as SC was in search of their first Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) victory of the 2022 campaign. Unfortunately, that win would have to wait. The squad did not lose, but instead the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Threshers started off hot, holding the majority of the possession and attacking chances in the early going. They took nine shots to the Builders' four in the first half of the bout, while converting on one of those chances in the 21st minute. Jaime Guardado was the recipient of a ball that the SC goalkeeper Jose Macias tried to punch out. The punched ball landed in front of him, and he took advantage by blasting it by several Builder defenders into the net for the opening goal. The score would stay 1-0 for Bethel until the intermission.
That is where things changed, as the latter stanza was tightly contested throughout. Southwestern had no interest in allowing the Threshers to score again, as they showed that effort by only allowing two shots on frame in the half. Southwestern had two shots on goal in the second, but in the 69th minute of the period, Mamadou Diarra was assisted by Hector Hernandez, who played the ball right in front of goal for DIarra to simply tap into the twine. Making that play possible was an incredible touch from Connor Inlow, who set up Hernandez to run with the ball into the box. It was 1-1 at that point in the match. The Moundbuilders would take the final five shots of the match, while one of those was on net and saved. It was not quite enough for SC, as the two squads would end in a 1-1 draw.
Diarra once again showed his worth with the lone Builder goal of the match. He took five of the squad's 15 shots, and had two of those threaten the keeper, including the tally. Hernandez, Wilber Landaverde and Alejandro Ramos were the other two Builders with multiple shots taken in the matchup. Reuben Kadanthottu, Jesus Osornio and Ramos rounded out Southwestern's five shots on net, with Diarra sending two on frame.
Jose Macias earned his first decision of the season in net, picking up the draw for the Moundbuilder squad. He made three saves on four shots on goal in the tilt, playing the entirety of the match between the pipes.
Southwestern (3-5-3, 0-3-3 KCAC) will have a one-week hiatus before returning to the pitch at home against the McPherson College Bulldogs on Wednesday, October 12 at 8:30 p.m. It will be another opportunity for the Builders to finally get off the schneid for their first KCAC triumph of the 2022 campaign.
