Box Score WINFIELD, Kan. - The Southwestern College men's soccer team hosted the University of Saint Mary on Saturday night at Richard L. Jantz Stadium for the first conference matchup of the season in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC).After a great start for the Moundbuilders, the Spires used their chances to take over the game. The Builders fell 2-1 in the conference opener.
It was an evenly played matched from the outset, where both teams had their chances. Both teams played hard, which was evident based on the thirty-three fouls by the Spires and nineteeninfractions by the Builders.
The game started in favor of the Builders. In the 5th minute of the game, Mamadou Diarra was able to find the back of the net to score the first and only goal for the Builders on this night.
The game went on and both teams had their chances. In the 16th minute, the Builders defense made a mistake and fouled one of Saint Mary's players which led to a Penalty Kick for USM. Paul Trejo used his opportunity and scored for the Spires to even the score at 1-1.
The momentum had shifted in favor of Saint Mary, as they scored their second goal in the 43rd minute after another mistake by the Builder defense. Guilherme Caldas scored the second and final goal for the Spires, after an assist by Paul Trejo to up the Saint Mary advantage to 2-1.
The Moundbuilders took nine shots, with just four of them being on target. The Spires hadten shots in the tilt, as six of them ended up on target.
The Builders (3-3-0, 0-1-0 KCAC) will be back on Wednesday as they travel up to York, Neb.where they will battle York University, as they look to even up their conference record and get back in good form heading into the brunt of the KCAC schedule in 2022.
