Missed Penalty Kick Relegates SC Men's Soccer to 1-1 Tie in Tilt with Avila

Box Score

WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College men's soccer team hosted Wednesday night's game against the Eagles of Avila University at Richard L. Jantz Stadium. In what ended up being an unfortunate tie between the two squads, the Builders controlled most of the first half but gave Avila the chance to tie things in the second half for the 1-1 deadlock finish.

To start this Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) battle, Mamadou Diarra scored on his second amazing chance of the bout to put the Builders up by one. In the 12th minute of the game, Mamadou Diarra received a beautiful pass by Hector Hernandez, dribbled the ball past the goalkeeper and scored the first goal of the game.

Southwestern kept up the pressure with shots by Enock Citenga and Sergio Vargas, but both tries were saved by Avila's goalkeeper Naguib Nassir.

The second half started slow. Both teams struggled to create any dangerous chances. Shots by Coby Stroud, Hector Hernandez, and Alejandro Ramos on the side of the Builders did not put a ton of pressure on Avila's goalkeeper.

It was the Eagles who used one of their chances to tie the game in the second stanza. In the 69th minute, Malcom Goswell was assisted by AJ Rankin, scoring the equalizing goal for Avila University.

Fighting until the end, both teams tried everything to be the team who would come out on top. Southwestern had a last chance to change the game in their favor when they received a penalty shot in the 87th minute. Mamadou Diarra walked up and smashed the ball off the inside of the left post. The ball caromed parallel to the goal line and back into play, leaving the final score at 1-1.

The Moundbuilders had fourteen shots, with ten of them having been on goal, compared to the Eagles who only had seven shots and three on frame.

The Builders (3-4-2, 0-2-2 KCAC) will now prepare to face Friends University next Saturday, October 1st in Wichita, Kan., hoping to earn their first KCAC win this season.
