WINFIELD, Kan – Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, the (14) Moundbuilders (6-2, 0-2) lost at home to Bethel College (5-3, 2-0) on homecoming, 13-20.
The Bethel Threshers' defense proved to be the deciding factor in this game, securing two crucial interceptions and holding off Southwestern's late-game charge.
After a scoreless initial quarter, in the second quarter, Bethel's Jacob Reyes connected with Mario Quintero for a 12-yard touchdown, but the extra point was missed, Bethel struck first, 0-6.
Southwestern answered back when
Sam Hunter powered through for a 3-yard rushing touchdown, but they also missed the extra point. The half ended tied up at 6-6.
The third quarter opened with an SC turnover, as Bethel's Brenden Sanders intercepted a pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown. With the extra point, Bethel was ahead 6-13.
Southwestern responded with a quick 2-play drive that concluded with
Ziyon Kenner rushing for a 2-yard touchdown, tying the game once again at 13-13.
In the fourth quarter, Bethel showed their resilience as DJ Ciers found Mario Quintero with a 41-yard touchdown pass, and the extra point was good, 13-20, which ultimately turned out to be the game-winning score.
The Moundbuilders will be back on the road next week, Saturday, October 28, 1pm at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Ks.
