WINFIELD, Kan - Behind an onslaught of three pointers and 24 points off the bench from
Justin DeMaria to lead all scorers, the undefeated and nationally ranked number 11 Southwestern College Moundbuilders (7-0, 3-0) defeated Sterling College (6-2, 2-1), 89-67.
The Builders hit nine three pointers in the first half alone and finished with 13 for the game.
And what was considered an off game for the likes of
Cevin Clark, the nation's third leading scorer, he hit four three pointers, shooting 40% from three, and finished with 18 points, three rebounds.
Clark starting the scoring for the Builders using the Warriors pressure against them, being face guarded,
Andrew O'Brien drove the ball towards Clark's defender, and Clark got an easy baseline back door layup, and the Builders never looked back.
But as Clark experienced a frustrating first half with foul trouble, the Builders filled the void by committee.
Wyatt Bell hit a three pointer and finished with four points,
Trey Abasolo hit a three pointer and finished with nine points.
Jarvis Jennings hit a three pointer and finished with nine points.
But none filled the void larger than DeMaria, who hit six three pointers, finished with 24, and four rebounds in only 18 minutes of action. He was efficient to say the least.
And one of the nation's top double-double machines,
Andrew O'Brien finished with six points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists.
The Moundbuilder's dual inside threats proved to be too much for the Warriors as well outscoring Sterling, 32-26 in the paint.
Zach Hidalgo finished with six points and eight rebounds. While
Mason Thiessen finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Â Â
Now the stage is set for one of the NAIA's biggest matchups of the season. Saturday, Dec. 2 on the road at (4)Oklahoma Wesleyan University (8-0, 3-0), the Builders will tip off at 3PM in a highly anticipated national and conference match up.
