No. 11 Southwestern Remains Undefeated at Friends, Clark Adds Name to Record Book

WICHITA, Kan. – Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, (11)Southwestern College (11-0, 6-0) continued their undefeated streak, defeating Friends University (4-6, 2-4) on the road, 90-82.

Builder fans were not only anticipating another SC victory, but waiting for the three-point shot that would move Cevin Clark into the men's basketball all-time record book for made three-pointers in a career.

Clark kept fans waiting for two games, over 65 minutes of game time without making a three pointer and still averaging 30 points while doing so.

Throughout the first half there were eight lead changes and six of those were in the final 6:47 of the half.

Clark had 16 first half points, and 0-2 from the three-point line.

First half scoring was shared by the Builders. Wyatt Bell hit a three-pointer. Andrew O'Brien would hit from deep. Reliable, Justin DeMaria hit two big three-pointers off the bench.

Although Southwestern's bench scoring has been a consistent foundation this season, Friends edged the Builder bench, 33-29.

After a Clark jumper, two of his 16 points, with :18 seconds left in the half, Southwestern leading, 38-37.

Al Emerllahu, for the Falcons, would get fouled on the final possession of the half as the buzzer sounded. Emerllahu would complete the old fashioned three-point play, giving the Falcons the halftime lead, 38-40.

To start the second half, Zach Hidalgo cleaned up a Clark jumper and finished the put back, 40-40, game was tied once again.

Within the first few minutes of the second half, there were two ties, and two lead changes. But the last time the Falcons would be in front, 44-45, was with 15:51 remaining, the Builders never relinquished the lead again in the second half.

With Southwestern up three, and 15 minutes left, Clark being guarded by Steele Chapman, had the ball out high in the left corner and called for a Mason Thiessen ball screen. With :20 seconds left on the shot clock, Clark drove to his right off the Thiessen screen, and nailed the three pointer at the top of the key and entered the record books. And put the Builders up six, 51-45.

Clark made his 243rd three pointer, passing Andrew Hamm's career record of 242.

Southwestern pushed the lead up to as many as 10, 70-60 with eight minutes to play. And the Falcons got as close as one, with four minutes to play, but the Builders held them off for the win, 90-82.
Clark finished with 31 points and five rebounds.

Stat stuffer, O'Brien finished with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists.

DeMaria added nine points, 3-7 from beyond the arc.

Bell was instrumental in adding his eight points, five rebounds, and perfect from downtown, 2-2.

Trey Abasolo chipped in seven points, three rebounds, and went 5-8 at the free throw line down the stretch to keep the Falcons at bay.

Twin towers, Hidalgo and Thiessen combined for nine points, eight rebounds, 4-5 from the field together.

Jarvis Jennings had four points, three rebounds, and one assist.

The Builders will be back in action for an exhibition game after the Christmas break, Friday, Dec. 29th on the road at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo, at 5:15 pm.
