WINFIELD, KAN. – On Wednesday, August 30, the Southwestern College men's soccer team welcomed the visiting Stars of Oklahoma City University for a non-conference season game. A game full of emotions and goals ended in a 4-0 win for the Builders.
The game started in favor of the Builders. Only 2 minutes into the match,
Nalan Kentner blasted a 30-yard shot over the goalkeeper into the top left corner of the goal to change the score to 1-0 Builders. Kentner's goal was assisted by
Eduardo Gonzalez.
Up by one goal, the Builders felt the momentum going and kept putting pressure on the Stars goalkeeper. In the 22 min, it was
Mamadou Diarra who found the back of the net after an assist by
Hector Hernandez. 2-0 Builders.
Just before halftime, the Builders had another great opportunity as Diarra took a shot from outside the box that hit the crossbar and bounced on the goal line.
Coming back after halftime, both teams had their chances to score.
KJ Masso saved a shot by the Stars in the 55th minute, and attempts by Kentner,
Connor Inlow, and
Jack Etheridge just missed the goal.
The game seemed to slow down until
Mamadou Diarra scored his 2nd goal of the day after a penalty kick to improve the lead to 3-0. Diarra is now the Builder's top scorer with six goals in two games.
The game started to heat up as number 21 on the OCU side received a yellow card after a foul on Etheridge. The game continued, but number 21 did not stop there and received another yellow card just seconds later, resulting in a red card for Oklahoma City in the 80th minute.
The game continued, but it didn't take long until number 18 on Stars side let loose of his emotions as he received a straight red card for a foul against the Builders. The Stars, now down two players, were completely unorganized and couldn't stop what was about to happen.
In the 89th minute,
Sebastian Rodriguez played a long ball over the defense into the feet of
Reuben Kadanthottu, who chipped the ball over the goalkeeper into the net to score the game's final goal.
An excellent performance by the Builders led to a 4-0 win over the visiting Oklahoma City Stars. The Builders (2-1-0) are now preparing to battle Southwestern Christian University on Friday, September 8, at Bethany, Okla.
