WINFIELD, Ks – In a highly anticipated Bishop's Cup matchup, (11) Southwestern College Moundbuilders defended their home turf against the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes, 24-3.
The Builders were held to a Preston Fashner 32 yard field goal to get on the board first after a 10 play drive by the offense.
And after the SC Defense held the Coyotes to punt, and just before the end of the first quarter with four seconds left,
Andre Jones caught a six yard touchdown pass from
Braden Howell, and a Fashner extra point put the Builders up 10-3.
Kansas Wesleyan got on the board in the second quarter with 13:28 left from a Talon Cope 45 yard field goal.
The SC offense responded with another Jones touchdown, with a 25 yard pass from Howell, and another Fashner extra point put the Builders up 17-3
Martez Jones would put the final touches on the game with a two yard touchdown run and another extra point from Fashner.
Howell finished the game completing 14 of 26 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
SC showcased a balanced rushing attack against the Coyotes defense, with
Sam Hunter leading the way with 71 yards on 16 carries.
Standout receiver, Jones, finished with four receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns to spark the Builder offense.
The Builder's defense held off the Coyotes offense, stifling Wesleyan quarterbacks Richard Lara and Jordan Moran who combined for 57 passing yards and no touchdowns. The Coyotes offense amassed only 11 net yards for the game behind the performance of
Josh Carter,
Eryk Preston,
Johnny Burton and the punisher,
Shane Rodriguez who finished with three sacks for 19 yards lost.
The undefeated Moundbuilders will look to continue the momentum Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 pm on the road at Tabor College.
