WINFIELD, KAN. – On Saturday, September 16th, the Southwestern College women's soccer team hosted play against the visitors of Bethany College in their second KCAC play of the 2023 season. The Builders showed up, played their strengths, and won the game 3-0.
The game started with chances for the Builders as Lydia Travis missed her shot high, and the Swedes goalkeeper saved Bryanna Kuhn's shot. Finally, the game started to speed up in favor of the Builders. Jules Cowley, who was subbed into the game, helped the Builder attack to put more pressure on the Swedes defense.In the 36th minute of play, Cowley received a ball from Natalia Bak, turned around, and played it back to Bak, who then fired the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal to score the first goal for the Builders. A beautiful play by the Builder offense resulted in the lead for the Builders.
Just a few minutes later, in the 42nd minute, the Builders continued their offensive attack as Kuhn's corner kick found the head of Teagan Smith, who scored her first goal of the season. Up by two, the Builders walked into halftime with a confident lead of 2-0.
Returning after halftime, the Builder continued their play with shots by Ana Llanos and Bak that were both saved by the Swedes goalkeeper. In the 74th minute, Daniela Barrantes Perez received a long ball from Jordan Griggs and placed the ball past the Swedes goalkeeper into the back of the net.
Three goals by Bak, Smith, and Barrantes, + a clean sheet for Mallorie Lund (6 saves), resulted in the first win for the Builders in the 2023 KCAC season.
The Builders (2-4-1, 1-1-0 KCAC) are now preparing to face Tabor College on Wednesday, September 23rd at 5 p.m. at Richard L. Jantz Stadium in Winfield, Kan.
