WINFIELD, Kan.  — No. 9 Southwestern College delivered a convincing 92-66 victory against the University of Saint Mary inside historic Stewart Field House on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.
Going into the game, Southwestern's
Cevin Clark was the NAIA's No. 1 scorer in the country, and he definitely drew the focus of the Saint Mary defense in the first half.
But the Moundbuilder student section also didn't let the Spires forget about them either.
"I loved the enthusiasm of our student section tonight," said, Head Coach,
Matt O'Brien. "Their support gave us a lot of positive energy when we needed it."
Making only one first half three pointer, one jumper, and two free throws, Clark finished with a difficult seven first half points.
Off the bench,
Trey Abasolo led the Builders in the first half scoring column with eight points, two big first half three pointers to offset the Spires suffocating defense on Clark.
Also helping ease the pressure, as usual, was
Justin DeMaria, with seven first half points.

Shooting an impressive 43.33 percent in the first half, the Moundbuilders took a 47-37 lead into halftime.

Southwestern came out of the locker room and continued to shoot 50.8 percent from the field in the second half. The closest the Spires got in the second half was seven points, and the Builders grew the lead to as much as 29 points, before cementing the 26 points win, 92-66.

Clark had 16 second half points to lead all scorers with 23 points, four rebounds, and went 1-7 from beyond the arc.

Zach Hidalgo would lead all rebounders with nine and eight points.

Andrew O'Brien finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists, to lead both teams in assists. O'Brien is currently ranked fifth in the country in total assists.

Jarvis Jennings had 14 points and seven rebounds.

DeMaria finished with 13 points and four rebounds.

"We had a great team effort tonight," said O'Brien. "I love to watch our team continue to pass the ball, share the ball, and play for each other."

The Builders are back in action Saturday, Jan. 20, as Historic Stewart Field House turns 100 years old and welcomes in Evangel University (8-8, 6-5), tip-off is at 4pm.
