Southwestern College Women's Basketball Prepares to Host Oklahoma Wesleyan

WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College women's basketball team will look to end a six-game losing streak as they welcome Oklahoma Wesleyan University (OKWU) for a KCAC showdown on Wednesday Dec 11 at Stewart Field House.

Southwestern (1-6,1-3) comes into the game after a 71-61 road loss to Avila University. The Builders have struggled offensively, shooting just 30.8% from the field this season, but they've relied heavily on senior Christy Wiebe. Wiebe leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, including shooting 76.6% from the free-throw line.

Oklahoma Wesleyan (3-6, 1-3) enters the game fresh off a 71-48 victory over Avila, snapping a three-game losing streak. The Eagles are led by Haley Meely, who has been a scoring force, averaging 16.6 points per game while shooting 41% from the field and 39.6% from three-point range. Rashaan Smith provides additional interior presence, averaging 10.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Key storylines to watch include the contrasting offensive styles of the two teams. OKWU shoots an efficient 41.5% from the field and averages 74.4 points per game, compared to Southwestern's 62.6 points per game. Defensively, Southwestern faces the challenge of containing Meely and Smith while addressing their own turnover issues, as the Builders average 18.7 turnovers per game. Meanwhile, the Eagles have excelled in capitalizing on opponent mistakes, averaging 10.8 steals per game.

For Southwestern, controlling the boards will be crucial. They have struggled with a -10.4 rebounding margin, compared to OKWU's slight edge on the glass with a +1.3 rebounding margin. Wiebe and Haven Matthews (8.0 PPG, 3.9 RPG) will need to step up against OKWU's rebounding leaders.

Both teams are looking to improve their standing in the KCAC as they battle for a key conference win. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM, promising a competitive matchup as Southwestern aims to protect their home court and OKWU looks to build on their recent momentum.
