MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Southwestern College Moundbuilders men's basketball team pulled off an impressive 80-76 overtime victory against NCAA Division II powerhouse Northwest Missouri State in an exhibition game Friday night at Bearcat Arena.
Southwestern's Wyatt Bell stole the spotlight, pouring in a game-high 27 points on 10-of-19 shooting, including three three-pointers. Bell also hit clutch free throws in the final seconds to seal the win for the Moundbuilders.
Zach Hidalgo was a force inside, recording a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds, dominating the glass on both ends of the floor.
Trey Abasolo added 11 points, hitting three critical three-pointers, including the first basket of overtime to give Southwestern early momentum.
Evan Barber contributed nine points and seven rebounds, while Justin DeMaria provided a spark off the bench with 10 points.
The game saw several momentum swings. The Moundbuilders jumped out to an early lead, but the Bearcats battled back to take a 38-36 advantage at halftime. Northwest extended its lead to 12 points midway through the second half, but Southwestern responded with a 12-4 run to cut the deficit.
Wyatt Bell's timely scoring and Hidalgo's relentless effort on the boards helped Southwestern outlast the Bearcats in the extra period.
Southwestern's defense proved pivotal in overtime, holding Northwest to just five points while forcing critical misses in the game's closing moments.
The Moundbuilders carry the momentum into the holiday break. They will be back in action at home Jan. 1, at 2 p.m., hosting Spurgeon College.
