Men's Basketball vs. Oklahoma Wesleyan Game Preview

WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College men's basketball team will face a tough challenge as they host Oklahoma Wesleyan University  in a KCAC clash on Dec 11, 7 p.m., at Stewart Field House.

Southwestern (8-2, 3-2) enters the game riding the momentum of a gritty 74-71 road win against Avila University. The Builders have relied on their rebounding dominance, averaging an impressive 47.3 rebounds per game, which gives them a significant edge over opponents. Forward Zach Hidalgo has been a force inside, averaging a double-double with 12.3 points and a league-leading 13.6 rebounds per game.

Oklahoma Wesleyan (7-3, 4-1) is looking to bounce back from a narrow 71-68 loss at Sterling College. Known for their defensive intensity, the Eagles boast a +4.7 turnover margin and average 10.6 steals per game, led by Derrick Talton Jr., who has 25 steals this season. Offensively, Jaden Lietzke has been a standout, averaging 16.4 points on an efficient 75.6% shooting from the field.

Key matchups to watch include the battle in the paint between Southwestern's Hidalgo and OKWU's Jaden Lietzke. Hidalgo's rebounding dominance, averaging 13.6 boards per game, will face a stiff test against Lietzke, who has been efficient offensively, shooting 75.6% from the field. On the perimeter, Southwestern's guards, led by Evan Barber (13.9 points per game, 52.2% from three), will aim to exploit OKWU's perimeter defense, which has allowed opponents to shoot 32% from beyond the arc. Tempo and turnovers will also play a significant role, as OKWU thrives on forcing mistakes, averaging 16.1 opponent turnovers per game. Southwestern must focus on valuing possessions, as they've averaged 14.1 turnovers in their contests.

A win for Southwestern could tighten the race in the KCAC standings and solidify their home dominance, while a victory for Oklahoma Wesleyan would reinforce their strong conference start and help them rebound from their recent loss.
