WINFIELD, KAN. – On Saturday, March 9
th, the Southwestern College Flag Football squad welcomed the Wildcats of Baker University at Richard L. Jantz Stadium in Winfield, Kan. In a thrilling matchup between, the Wildcats emerged victorious with a commanding final score of 20-6.
The game kicked off with Southwestern making an early statement, as
Miranda Dooley carried the ball into the end zone for a touchdown, putting Southwestern up 6-0 in the first quarter. However, Baker University quickly responded in the second quarter when Sanija Waller powered through the defense to score, tying the game at 6-6.
As the game progressed into the third quarter, Baker University began to pull away. Sanija Waller showcased her versatility by throwing a touchdown pass to Destiny Martinez, extending Baker's lead to 13-6. The momentum remained firmly with Baker in the fourth quarter, as Kayla Harrison sealed the victory with another touchdown, bringing the final score to 20-6 in favor of Baker University.
Examining the team stats, both teams demonstrated strong offensive performances. The Builders showcased their rushing prowess, gaining 69 yards on 11 attempts, while Baker University closely followed with 67 yards on eight attempts. In the passing game, Baker University took the lead, amassing 172 yards on 22 completions compared to Southwestern's 63 yards on 13 completions. Overall, Baker University dominated in total offense, accumulating 239 yards on 45 plays, while Southwestern managed 132 yards on 38 plays.
The Builders will be back on Wednesday, March 13
th at 6:00 p.m. when they play the Braves of Ottawa University at Ottawa, Kan.
