Builders Dominate Ottawa 41-0 in Season Opener

OTTAWA, Kan. — The Builders (1-0, 0-0) kicked off the season with a dominating 41-0 victory over Ottawa University (0-1, 0-0) on Saturday at AdventHealth Field. The Moundbuilders' offense fired on all cylinders, particularly in the second quarter, scoring 28 points to break the game open.

Quarterback Braden Howell led the charge for Southwestern, completing 14 of 23 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Howell connected on a 77-yard strike to Joe Smyth and a 70-yard pass to Matthew Holthusen, both scoring plays that highlighted his impressive day through the air.

Smyth was the top target, hauling in three catches for 103 yards, including the 77-yard touchdown that showcased his game-breaking speed. Holthusen contributed four catches for 81 yards, adding a 70-yard touchdown reception that kept Ottawa's defense on its heels.

On the ground, Martez Jones was nearly unstoppable, rushing for 156 yards on 13 carries, including an 81-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter that capped off the scoring. Jones also threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Josh Edson in the second quarter, showcasing his versatility.

The Moundbuilders' defense stifled Ottawa, holding them to just 93 total yards and forcing two turnovers. Joey Mars led the defensive effort with seven tackles, including one for a loss, while Isaiah Yehudh added four tackles and two of those for losses.

"I am proud of our guys' effort, our first group, our second and third group played a lot of snaps tonight and the standard did not change." Said Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator, Trevor Strong. "Great to see a lot of guys get in the game and still hold on to the shutout."

Kicker Corbin Grant was perfect on the day, converting all five of his extra-point attempts and drilling field goals from 29 and 40 yards out.

Southwestern controlled the game from start to finish, outgaining Ottawa 590 yards to 93 and holding the Braves to just three first downs.

The Builders return home this week for the home opener at Richard L. Jantz Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7, hosting Avila University, kickoff is set for 7pm.
