WINFIELD, Kan. - Southwestern coming off a dominating performance against Ottawa University, 41-0, at AdventHealth Field to start the season, will now host Avila University this Saturday, September 7 at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
The Moundbuilders finished the game with a total of 590 yards of offense, 353 on the ground, and 237 through the air. The Builders held Ottawa to 93 yards of offense, 75 yards rushing, and 18 yards passing.
Southwestern was voted third in the Kessinger preseason media poll, Evangel edged out a tight vote for first place followed by Friends University in second place.Â
Senior running back, Martez Jones currently leads the Kessinger Division after one game with 157 total yards rushing from last week's face-off against the Braves. Jones is averaging 12 yards per carry with 13 carries last game.
Senior quarterback,
Braden Howell is second in the division with 223 yards passing and third in total touchdowns, as he had three touchdowns in last week's win. Howell is averaging 9.7 yards per attempt with a 60.9% completion rate.
Avila was tied for first place with Kansas Wesleyan in the Bissel conference.
Avila defeated Bethany, 24-21, with 292 yards of offense, 84 yards rushing, and 208 yards passing.
Sophomore, Nick Sanford II, leads Avila in passing yards with 208. Sanford II had 17 completions with a 42.5% completion rate.
Senior, Jalen Thach leads Avila in receiving with 65 yards and averaging 13 yards per touch.
The Builders will look to lean on their defense to stop the Sanford II and Thach offensive attack. The offense will look to repeat its performance from a week ago against an Avila defense that is geared up to stop the Howell and Jones threats.
