WINFIELD, Kan. - The Southwestern College Moundbuilders make a short trip up to Wichita to take on rival Friends University.
The Builders have reigned supreme in their last ten matches, winning eight of them by an average margin of 15 points. However, this will be the first time in ten years that the Builders come into this game as underdogs. The Falcons have had the best start since their 2018-2019 campaign during the Jordan Murdock Jr. era. Right now, they are sitting at 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the KCAC. They are currently sitting in second place in the conference and are every bit as talented as their record deems them to be. The Falcon's big wins on the year include a recent one when they beat KCAC powerhouse Oklahoma Wesleyan 88-82 at home and then a dominating 110-88 win against Ottawa University, handing them their second conference loss. The Falcons also dominated NCAA Division II Northwestern Oklahoma State 92-71.
Â
Scouting the Falcons: The head of the snake for Friends is a 6'5 215 215-pound senior in KJ Spiller. His presence in the KCAC this year has been nothing short of dominating. Spiller averages 16.3 ppg and 6.4 rpg. Spiller also shoots 50 percent from the field and 36 percent from three. The next man up is Lee Cahlese. The junior guard averages 12.4 ppg and 4.1 rpg on 41 percent shooting from long range. Cahlese has put together a series of 20-point games lately in the first year of his NAIA campaign and is capable of being one of the best shooters the Builders have faced all year. The Falcons also have 5-6 capable of having a big game every other night, and they have proved it throughout the season. Colin Maclin, Kee'on Hutton, and Ring Deng have been constant scoring and defensive threats all season, and look out for them to be a big factor tonight.Â
Â
For the Builders: Junior Wyatt Bell has continued to be a scoring force for the Builders, as he averages 18.5 ppg as well as 4.5 rpg. Zach Hidalgo continues to lead the KCAC in rebounding at 12.3 rpg. If the builders want to win this game, they will likely need strong production from the big man due to Spillers and Deng's size and speed. The sharpshooters for the Builders, Austin Hilton, Evan Barber, and Justin Demaria, will likely need to come alive as well, as the 3-point line is an area where the Builders reign supreme in this match up. Swiss Army Knife Trey Abasolo is also key to this game, as he will likely be tasked with guarding one of the Falcon's hot shooting guards.Â
