LAWRENCE, Kan. — The men's and women's cross country teams finished with no overall team score at the Billy Mills Classic hosted by the Haskell Indian Nations University on Saturday evening. Nevertheless all three Southwestern runners hit season-best marks in their respective races.
On the women's side, Lauryn Peterson continued her streak of season-best performances en route to a 27th-place finish. The senior shaved 95 seconds off of her previous week's outing in Chanute with a time of 26:11.2, her third-best 5,000-meter performance as a collegiate student-athlete.
On the men's side, Sophomore Derek Ponce-Gonzalez conquered the 8,000-meter course in a personal-best time of 28:21.4, placing 31st overall. Senior Jamell Sanchez followed shortly behind, also completing a personal-best performance with a time of 29:39.5, earning the 38th position.
The Moundbuilders will be back in action on November 8th as the men's and women's programs travel to Leavenworth for the KCAC Cross Country Championships, hosted by the University of Saint Mary.
