WINFIELD, Kans. — The Southwestern College men's soccer team heads to Springfield on Wednesday night for a pivotal Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup against Evangel University. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. as the Builders look to rebound after a 2-1 loss to Tabor on Oct. 11.
The Builders enter the contest with an 8-5 overall record and a 5-3 mark in conference play. Despite falling to Tabor, Southwestern's offensive leader Jack Bagley Etheridge continued his strong season, scoring his 14th goal of the fall. Etheridge has been the driving force for the Builders' attack, consistently creating scoring opportunities against top KCAC defenses.
Goalkeeper K.J. Masso has anchored the defense this season, starting every game for Southwestern. Masso has recorded 60 saves, providing steady play and leadership in the net.
Evangel comes into Wednesday's matchup with a 6-2-3 overall record and a 2-2-3 conference mark. The Valor are coming off a 1-1 draw against York University on Oct. 11, with Hayes Van Breusegen scoring the lone goal. Van Breusegen is tied with Juyong Kim for the team lead in goals with three apiece. In goal, Davide Marzoli has logged 597 minutes and made 36 saves this fall.
Last season's meeting between the two programs was a thriller, with Southwestern pulling out a 1-0 win on an 89th-minute goal. The Builders outshot Evangel 16-10 in that contest. Andre Luiten played all 90 minutes in goal for Southwestern, finishing with four saves, while Evangel's Ryan Garner tallied two saves in 90 minutes.
As both teams near the end of conference play, Wednesday's matchup carries major implications for the KCAC standings. A road win would help Southwestern strengthen its position among the league's top teams as the Builders look to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
