STERLING, Kan. — Southwestern College turned in a complete performance Saturday afternoon, overwhelming Sterling College 74–28 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Quarterback Jamie Odom led a balanced and explosive Moundbuilder offense, throwing for five touchdowns and rushing for another as Southwestern rolled to 510 yards of total offense. The win improves the Builders to 6–1 overall and keeps them in the thick of the KCAC title race.
Odom completed 20 of 30 passes for 279 yards, finding 11 different receivers in one of the team's most efficient outings of the year. His command of the offense was evident from the first drive, guiding a 10-play, 67-yard march capped by an 11-yard touchdown to Joe Smyth. On the next series, Aidan Koenig intercepted a Sterling pass and returned it to the red zone, setting up a 14-yard touchdown connection from Odom to Hunter Reaves less than a minute later.
Sterling responded with a score early in the second quarter, but Southwestern's special teams answered immediately as Smyth broke free for an 89-yard kickoff return touchdown to reclaim momentum. The Moundbuilders then exploded for three more touchdowns before halftime — a 5-yard strike to Joshua Mazyck, a 19-yard connection with Matthew Holthusen, and a short toss to Matthew Johnson — building a 33–7 halftime lead.
Mazyck showcased his big-play speed in the third quarter, sprinting 58 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 47–7. He finished with 68 rushing yards on only three carries and added a receiving touchdown, averaging more than 22 yards per touch. Chris Collier-Surley and backup quarterback Eric Erbe each added short scoring runs, while Thelonius Jones capped the day with a 62-yard kickoff return touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Wide receiver Bryce Chambers was a steady target all game, hauling in five receptions for 55 yards. Holthusen added three catches for 68 yards, and the offensive line paved the way for 201 rushing yards while not allowing a sack. Southwestern averaged 7.2 yards per play and converted 57 percent of its third downs, sustaining long drives while capitalizing on big plays.
Defensively, the Moundbuilders were equally dominant. Southwestern intercepted four passes — one each by Koenig, Elijah Moroney, Corey McCoy, and Jason Wickliff — and limited Sterling to just 52 rushing yards on 38 attempts. DreShaun Flowers led the defense with seven tackles, while Moroney added a sack and multiple pressures that kept Sterling's passing game under constant stress.
The Moundbuilders scored in all three phases — offense, defense, and special teams — marking their most complete performance of the season and their highest point total in a KCAC game in recent years.
Southwestern returns home next Saturday to host Friends University for Homecoming Night at Richard L. Jantz Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
