WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College men's soccer will close its regular season Monday night with a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup against Bethany College. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Southwestern (9-8, 6-6 KCAC) enters the contest sitting fifth in the conference standings and looks to rebound from a setback on Senior Night as it aims to finish strong before postseason play. The Moundbuilders are led by senior forward Jack Bagley-Etheridge, who continues to pace the team with 16 goals this season.
In goal, KJ Masso has been a steady presence throughout the year, logging 1,503 minutes with 79 saves and a .752 save percentage.
Bethany (3-11-1, 1-9-1 KCAC) sits 14th in the league and will look to end its season with an upset on home turf. The Swedes are led by Baptista Amofa and Emmanuel Dukuly, who each have six goals this season. Goalkeeper Gunvald Andresen has tallied 86 saves in 863 minutes with a .632 save percentage, while Marco Paniagua recently played a full 90 minutes, making four saves.
When the two teams met last season, Southwestern rolled to a 7-1 victory. Eduardo Gonzalez opened the scoring in the 25th minute, followed two minutes later by Bagley-Etheridge to give the Moundbuilders a 2-0 lead. After halftime, Marcos Benavidez extended the advantage with goals in the 49th and 58th minutes. Bethany broke through in the 63rd minute on a goal from Gavin Bellomy, but Southwestern closed strong with late goals from Alexis Soriano in the 80th minute, Hector Hernandez in the 84th, and Wilber Landaverde in the 88th to seal the win.
Goalkeeper Andre Luiten played all 90 minutes in that matchup for the Moundbuilders, recording one save, while Bethany's Marco Paniagua went the distance in goal with four saves.
Southwestern will look to build on that past success Monday night as the team hopes to capitalize on this game to keep in good standing in the conference.
