Southwestern surges late to top Cottey for first time in series

NEVADA, Mo. — Southwestern College used a dominant fourth quarter to make a little history in tonights contest night.

Emma Parker scored all 13 of her points after halftime and the Lady Builders closed on a 28-15 run to earn a 70-58 win at Cottey, the program's first-ever victory over the Comets in the series.

Southwestern (3-1) trailed 34-33 at the break and 43-42 heading to the fourth, but Breanna Goad buried back-to-back 3-pointers to open the final period and flip the momentum for good. Parker followed with three triples of her own in the quarter as the Lady Builders pushed the lead to as many as 12.

Goad finished with a team-high 18 points, knocking down four 3-pointers and going 4-for-4 at the line. Parker added four 3s off the bench, while Kennedy Ford and Martha De La Rosa chipped in 12 points apiece.

Macey Pond anchored Southwestern inside with 9 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, helping the Lady Builders to a 37-36 edge on the glass. Southwestern also converted Cottey's 12 turnovers into 19 points and got 17 points from its bench.

The Lady Builders survived a hot start from Cottey (0-7), which led by as many as 10 in the first quarter behind 13 early points from Gabrielle Burrus. Southwestern clawed back to a 21-20 lead after one and stayed within a possession most of the night before taking control in the final 10 minutes.

Burrus led all scorers with 19 points for the Comets, and AuShae Farris added 17, including three 3-pointers. Makenzie Haynes came off the bench to score 11.

Southwestern finished 9 of 30 from beyond the arc but hit five of those 3s in the fourth quarter and went 3 of 3 at the foul line in the period to put the game away.

The Lady Builders now return home to open conference play on Saturday, November 15, hosting the McPherson College Bulldogs for Military Night. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m
