WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College dropped its second straight game, 93-85 in overtime to (RV) Bethel College on Wednesday, November 15th, in KCAC men's basketball action at Stewart Field House.
The Moundbuilders (4-2, 0-2 KCAC) put together one of their most efficient halves of the young season, shooting nearly 60% from the field to take a 43-36 lead into halftime. Southwestern carried that momentum into the second half, opening on a 10-7 burst to go up 53-43 with 16 minutes remaining, prompting a Bethel timeout.
Out of the break, junior guard Evan Barber drilled a corner 3-pointer to push the lead back to double digits, but Bethel quickly countered with a 7-0 run to stay within striking distance. Southwestern managed to steady itself and held a 77-71 advantage entering the final five minutes.
Bethel's turning point came when sixth man Trenton Patterson converted a four-point play, slicing the lead to 77-75. The Threshers continued to apply pressure, ultimately forcing overtime at 83-83.
Bethel (6-1, 2-0 KCAC) seized control in the extra period, shooting 5 of 8 from the field and outscoring the Moundbuilders 16-8 to secure the road victory.
Southwestern was led by senior guard Wyatt Bell, who finished with 21 points, three rebounds, and a season-high eight assists. Barber added 18 points, three rebounds, and five assists, while Nigel John provided a strong interior presence with 18 points and four boards.
The Builders shot 53.4% from the floor and 34.8% from beyond the arc, but were unable to overcome Bethel's late surge.
Southwestern now turns its attention to a challenging road test against No. 11 University of Saint Mary. The Spires (6-1, 1-1 KCAC), whose lone loss came against Bethel, host the Moundbuilders on Saturday, Nov. 22, with tipoff set for 3 p.m. in Leavenworth, Kansas.
