Moundbuilders Push York to Overtime in Hard-Fought KCAC Quarterfinal

YORK, Neb.  — Fifth-seeded Southwestern College men's soccer battled fourth-seeded York University into overtime before falling 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon in a KCAC quarterfinal match.

Southwestern finished its season 10-9 overall and 7-6 in KCAC play, while York improved to 12-4-3 (8-2-3 KCAC) to advance to the conference semifinals.

The Moundbuilders struck first in the ninth minute when senior Jack Bagley-Etheridge cleaned up a loose ball in front of goal following a corner kick from Carlos Villalba. The goal was Bagley-Etheridge's 19th of the season, setting a new single-season school record and extending his team lead.

York evened the match five minutes later when Tomas Viralhadas broke through the Southwestern defense on a through ball and finished to make it 1-1.

Southwestern controlled large portions of the match and turned in one of its strongest defensive efforts of the season. The back line, led by standout defender Aidan Wigg, frustrated York's attack and limited the Panthers to just three second-half shots. Wigg earned praise from commentators for his steady play and leadership. Goalkeeper Andre Luiten added four saves to keep the Moundbuilders in contention.

York scored the game-winner in the 94th minute when Archford Manduvi collected a loose ball outside the box and sent a low shot into the net for the golden goal. Southwestern held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks but was outshot 10-7 overall.

Despite the loss, the match capped one of the most successful seasons in Southwestern history. Senior forward Jack Bagley-Etheridge finished the year with 19 goals, a new program record that ranks fifth nationally in the NAIA. He also set a school record with 42 total points, placing ninth in the KCAC. Earlier this season, he was named NAIA Player of the Week.

Senior goalkeeper KJ Masso also had an outstanding year, earning KCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors the same week Bagley-Etheridge was named Offensive Player of the Week, giving Southwestern a conference sweep. Masso appeared in 18 matches, recording 81 saves and a .730 save percentage while anchoring one of the KCAC's top defensive units.

The 2025 season will be remembered as a milestone year for Southwestern, marked by broken records, first-time victories, and a team that elevated the standard for the program under head coach Lee Howarth.
