WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College closes out the calendar year Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Spurgeon College in a men's basketball game at Stewart Field House. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
The Builders enter the matchup with an 8-4 overall record and a 3-4 mark in conference play. Spurgeon College comes in at 3-4 overall and 2-0 in league action.
Southwestern returns home after earning an 80-73 road win over Florida College on Dec. 20 in Temple Terrace, Fla. Nigel John scored 20 points as the Builders erased a double-digit second-half deficit after trailing 38-33 at halftime. Evan Barber added 18 points, and Southwestern took the lead late before closing the game at the free-throw line.
Wyatt Bell leads Southwestern in scoring at 19.5 points per game while shooting 49.7 percent from the field, and Barber is averaging 15.1 points per contest while shooting 41.4 percent from three-point range. John has been one of the most efficient scorers on the roster, shooting 73.9 percent from the field while averaging 13.2 points, and Zach Hidalgo leads the team in rebounding at 9.3 boards per game.
The Builders will look to carry that momentum into Wednesday's contest against a Spurgeon team that has opened conference play unbeaten. The game marks Southwestern's final contest of 2024.
