WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College Moundbuilders (15-7, 9-7 ) suffered a heartbreaking 66-65 loss to York University (6-15, 3-13 ) on Saturday at the Freeman Center, as a last-second tip-in by Rhino Hernandez, his only field goal of the entire game, gave the Panthers their only lead of the game when it mattered most.
Southwestern led 65-64 in the closing moments after controlling the game for nearly the entire contest. However, after a missed York three-point attempt, Hernandez was in the right place at the right time, securing an offensive rebound and tipping it in with 14.2 seconds remaining to put the Panthers ahead.
Following a Builders timeout with 10.3 seconds left,Â
Justin DeMaria got a clean look at a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, but his shot bounced off the rim, sealing the one-point defeat for Southwestern.
Despite the loss,Â
Evan Barber led the Mound builders with 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists, whileÂ
Wyatt Bell added 14 points and three steals.Â
Trey Abasolo chipped in 12 points, andÂ
Zach Hidalgo controlled the boards with 13 rebounds.
Southwestern appeared in control throughout much of the game, leading 36-25 at halftime and holding off York's second-half push. However, the Panthers outscored the Builders 41-29 in the final 20 minutes, fueled by Andrew Bennett's game-high 21 points and eight rebounds. Carl Thorpe Jr. added 18 points and 14 rebounds, giving York a dominant presence in the paint.
York struggled from beyond the arc, converting just 4-of-21 three-pointers (19%), but their 40 points in the paint and dominance on the glass (45-40 rebounding edge) proved to be the difference. Southwestern now looks to regroup as they continue their push for a strong finish in KCAC play.
Oklahoma Wesleyan is next up for the Builders on the road, Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m.
