Southwestern Splits Doubleheader with Central Christian, 1-1

WINFIELD, Kan. – Southwestern College secured its first win of the season in the second game of a doubleheader against Central Christian College on Wednesday at Broadway Sports, rebounding from an 11-4 loss in Game 1 with a 5-2 victory in Game 2.

Game 1: Central Christian 11, Southwestern 4

Despite an early rally, Southwestern (1-1) could not contain Central Christian's offense, which produced 16 hits in the opener. The visitors broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning with a two-run double from P. Tate and continued to add to their lead.

The Moundbuilders answered in the bottom of the third when M. Reinert drove in two runs with a single, followed by an RBI hit from T. Mesna to tie the game. However, Central Christian pulled away with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

M. Griffin (1-0) went the distance for Central Christian, striking out nine over seven innings. Southwestern's pitching duo of M. Shaw (0-1) and E. Willesden allowed 16 hits and 11 runs combined.

Game 2: Southwestern 5, Central Christian 2

In the nightcap, the Moundbuilders (1-1) responded with a more efficient offensive performance, collecting nine hits while capitalizing on defensive miscues by Central Christian.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Southwestern tied it in the second and took the lead for good in the third when L. Hardman delivered an RBI single. T. Henry's two-run double in the fourth extended the advantage to 4-1.

F. Campbell (1-0) was stellar on the mound, scattering 12 hits across seven innings while allowing just two runs and striking out five.

Central Christian (1-5) had its chances, collecting 12 hits but stranding eight runners on base. C. Frick led the Tigers' offense, going 4-for-4 with a stolen base.

The Moundbuilders will look to build on their first win of the season as they continue non-conference play next week.
