Winfield, Kan. – Southwestern College Athletic Director Matt O'Brien has announced the promotion of Mike Abasolo to Assistant Athletic Director. Since joining the department as Sports Information Director in 2023, Abasolo has quickly established himself as a key leader within Builder Athletics, demonstrating strong leadership, innovative thinking, and an unwavering commitment to student-athlete success.
With more than two decades of experience in coaching and education, Abasolo's background includes two years as a head girls' basketball coach, seven years as a head boys' basketball coach, and 12 years as a high school journalism teacher. His 23-year coaching career, spanning NAIA and high school levels, has given him a deep understanding of athletics, media, and student engagement, making him a vital asset to the department.
Since arriving at Southwestern, Abasolo has played a pivotal role in enhancing the department's marketing and fan engagement efforts. Because he prioritizes our student-athletes in everything he does, for example, he has significantly enhanced the student-athlete Media Day experience. His leadership has strengthened the department's visibility, and he has stepped up as an interim coach when needed, further proving his versatility and dedication to Builder Athletics.
