Game 1: Southwestern Falls Short in Season Opener
Winfield, Kan. – The Southwestern College Moundbuilders opened their season with a tough 3-0 loss to Central Christian (KS) in the first game of their opening day doubleheader at Broadway Sports Complex.
Despite a strong pitching performance from M. Cleveland, who allowed just four hits and struck out six over seven innings, the Moundbuilders struggled offensively. Central Christian struck early with two runs in the first inning and added an insurance run in the seventh, while Southwestern failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Game 2: Late Rally by Central Christian Seals Moundbuilders' Defeat
In the second game, Southwestern put up a stronger offensive fight but ultimately fell 6-4, as Central Christian completed the sweep.
The Moundbuilders took an early lead with a four-run third inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from B. Ulrich. However, Central Christian responded with a four-run rally of their own in the top of the third, followed by two more runs in the sixth inning to take the lead.
T. Castner started on the mound for the Moundbuilders but ran into trouble in the third, surrendering three earned runs before being relieved. Despite strong bullpen efforts to keep the game within reach, Southwestern was unable to complete a late-inning comeback.
The Moundbuilders (0-2) will look to bounce back tomorrow as they play Central Christian again in another doubleheader.Â
