FULTON, Mo. — Southwestern College's flag football team couldn't hold off William Woods University (3-3, 3-3) on Saturday afternoon, losing 32-12 in a conference match that ended their recent winning streak.
The game, held at William Woods, saw a strong performance from Owls quarterback Makenzie Hicks, who threw for five touchdowns and 259 yards. Hicks' play was the difference-maker, connecting with Olivia Perkins and Evonne Bruestle for key scores in the Owls' 32-point outing.
The Builders' (3-3, 3-3)Â offense struggled throughout, as they were unable to generate consistent yardage. Quarterback Kennedi Hayes completed 10 of 28 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions. Hayes connected with Mary Jones for a 19-yard touchdown in the first quarter and again in the fourth quarter, but the Builders couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.
Southwestern's defense made some plays, with standout efforts from Vivianna Solis, who intercepted a pass, and Olivia Manfre, who had an interception and solid punting efforts. Despite these individual efforts, the Builders were overpowered by the Owls' fast-paced offense.
The game began evenly, with Southwestern taking an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter. However, William Woods responded quickly, and the Builders couldn't regain the momentum after the Owls scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter.
Southwestern now looks to regroup after their 12-32 defeat, with hopes of bouncing back in their next matchup. Buidlers will return home to play Bethel College (KS), Wednesday, March 19th at 6:00 PM.Â
