Sterling Sweeps Doubleheader Behind Explosive Offense Against Southwestern

WINFIELD, Kan. — Sterling College erupted for 25 runs across two games, rolling to a dominant doubleheader sweep over Southwestern on Saturday, taking the first game 10-5 and following up with a 15-1 five-inning rout in Game 2.

In the opener, Sterling (18-9, 5-2) pounded out 13 hits and used a four-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Makenna Cunningham sparked the offense with two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Makayla Seidel tripled and drove in two. Destiny Perales also had three hits and two RBIs for the Warriors.

Mikayla Viehland earned the win, allowing just two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings while striking out five. Megan Hedgecock closed it out despite some late pressure, as Southwestern scored twice in the seventh.

Reagan Wright led Southwestern (6-11, 0-4) with three hits and two RBIs, while Faith Howard and Kalli Viegra each added an RBI.

Sterling picked up right where it left off in the second game, plating 11 runs in the second inning alone en route to a mercy-rule victory.

The Warriors racked up 23 hits in the five-inning contest, with Alesha Campos driving in three runs on three hits and Seidel adding three more hits and two RBIs. Backup catcher Ariana Martinez went 3-for-3 and scored twice, while Kinsley Midgley contributed two RBIs on a double in the fourth.

Sterling starter Adri Olivarria allowed just one run on six hits over 4 1/3 innings for the win. Midgley came on in relief to close the door in the fifth.

Southwestern's lone run came in the first inning of Game 2 when Tiara Henry tripled home Mackenzie Reinert. That was all the offense the Moundbuilders could muster, as they dropped to 0-5 in conference play.

Sterling improves to 6-3 in KCAC action and continues to climb in the conference standings with the sweep.
