WINFIELD, Kan. — The Southwestern College Moundbuilders put up a determined effort but were ultimately outmatched by the undefeated Ottawa University Braves, who cruised to a 34-0 victory in their confernce matchup at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
From the start, the Braves (11-0, 7-0) made their presence felt, taking an early 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter with a touchdown catch from Jazlyn Camacho on an 18-yard pass from quarterback Madysen Carrera. Ottawa added a missed extra point, leaving the score at 6-0 as the first half concluded.
Southwestern (4-4, 4-4) displayed grit in the second half, with quarterback Kennedi Hayes connecting with teammates like Teagan Smith and Shariffa Piamonte on several solid attempts. Despite the offensive effort, the Moundbuilders were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Their defense, however, fought valiantly, with standout performances from Vivianna Solis and Andrea Moon, limiting Ottawa's offense to just seven first downs.
Ottawa's offense, led by Carrera's efficient passing and the playmaking of key players like Camacho, Marley Spielberg, and Cynthia Homs, came alive in the second half. Carrera threw for 261 yards, including a 1-yard rushing touchdown, while Spielberg made her mark with two touchdowns, including one from an interception return. Ottawa's offense extended their lead in the third quarter, adding two more touchdowns, and sealed the game with two quick scores in the final minute.
Despite the tough defeat, Southwestern's defense showed resilience. They recorded 29 tackles and forced an interception from Olivia Manfre, which kept them in the game for longer than the final score might suggest. The Moundbuilders now look to build on their defensive improvements and refine their offensive execution as they prepare for their next matchup.
Southwestern will take on the University of Saint Mary Spires on March 29, 2025, at home, for their last home conference matchup, hoping to bounce back from this challenging loss.
