Southwestern drops two games to York

WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College (8-20, 4-17) came up short in both games in a KCAC doubleheader against York University (Neb.)(11-16, 8-10), falling 7–5 in the opener and 4–3 in a tightly contested Game 2 at Broadway Sports Complex.

In Game 1, the Moundbuilders struck early as designated hitter Brice Nittler doubled in the first inning and later scored to give Southwestern a 1–0 lead. The offense continued to produce, with run-scoring hits from Preston Carrillo and J.j Cardinal helping the Builders stay close throughout. Carrillo finished 2-for-4, while Cardinal and Mitch Meinen each drove in runs.

Game 2 was a back-and-forth contest highlighted by a standout performance from senior left-hander Gannon Dow. He struck out 10 and allowed just four hits over seven innings, but two of those hits were solo home runs off the bat of Galvan, who again led York's offense. Southwestern briefly took a 3–2 lead in the fifth after Andrew Brautman walked, Nittler was hit by a pitch, and Cardinal reached on an error, followed with a two-run single to give the Builders the lead. York answered immediately in the sixth and took the lead for good in the seventh. Outfielders Luca Dincola and Cooper Smith each reached base in the late innings, but the tying run was stranded to end the game.

The builders look to bounce back in their next match up on Tuesday April 1st as they host Avila University at Brodway Sports Complex.
