McPHERSON, Kan. — Southwestern College (6-16, 0-6) dropped both games of Saturday's KCAC softball doubleheader against McPherson College (8-16, 4-8), falling 14-2 in five innings in the opener and 6-1 in Game 2 at Bulldog Park.
In Game 1, the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, scoring three runs in each of the first three innings before tacking on five more in the fourth to enforce the run rule. The Lady Builders managed just three hits in the contest, with senior T. Henry providing the lone bright spot a two-run home run in the third inning that plated F. Howard and briefly cut the deficit to 6-2.
McPherson's M. Smithee and S. Robles led the offensive barrage. Smithee went deep in the third for a three-run homer, while Robles finished with three RBIs, including a three-run shot of her own in the second inning. The Bulldogs racked up 13 hits and took advantage of five Southwestern errors and wild pitches.
F. Campbell (0-1) took the loss for Southwestern, surrendering six runs (three earned) over two innings. M. Miller allowed eight more in relief.
In the nightcap, the Lady Builders showed more grit, keeping the game close through four innings. J. Boyd drove in the lone run with an RBI single in the fourth, scoring N. Celestino to make it 2-1. However, a three-run homer by Smithee in the fifth inning blew the game open for McPherson.
Southwestern starter M. Shaw went the distance, giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits over six innings while striking out one. Offensively, Boyd and Hardman paced the Builders with two and one hits, respectively, as part of a five-hit effort.
McPherson's A. Thompson earned the complete-game win in Game 2, striking out five and walking four while scattering five hits across seven innings.
Southwestern returns to action next week with another test in conference play.
