WINFIELD, Kan. — A balanced offensive attack and timely pitching helped Southwestern College softball secure a split in Wednesday's conference doubleheader against York (NE), (8-24, 3-11), winning Game 1, 5-4, before falling in extra innings in Game 2, 5-4, at Broadway Sports Complex.
In the opener, the Lady Builders (7-17,1-6) came out strong and held off a late push to seal the victory. Junior designated player Kalli Viegra led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Catcher Tiara Henry added two hits and a run, while second baseman Jolie Boyd reached base multiple times and scored. Southwestern struck early and leaned on consistent defense to support a solid outing from starter Morgan Shaw, who worked into the eighth inning to earn the win.
Game 2 saw another back-and-forth battle as the Lady Builders fought from behind to tie the game in the late innings. Center fielder Reagan Wright contributed two hits and scored, while shortstop Taylor Mesna came through with two hits and two RBIs. Mackenzie Reinert added a pair of base hits in limited at-bats, helping keep the offense moving. Sophomore pitcher Faith Campbell tossed all eight innings, battling through traffic and keeping the game within reach before a decisive York run in the top of the eighth proved to be the difference.
With contributions from across the lineup, Southwestern showed grit and depth throughout the doubleheader. The Lady Builders move forward in conference play with confidence, bolstered by strong performances from both veteran leaders and emerging freshmen.
